How to Get Your Business Mentioned in Google AI Overviews

To get your business mentioned in Google AI Overviews, your page has to be indexed, eligible for a snippet, and ranking well for the question. Google builds the overview from its own results. Then keep your Google Business Profile complete and current, since local answers lean on it. There is no submission form and nothing to add.

This post is built on Google Search Central's page on AI features, John Mueller's May 2025 post for site owners and Google's Business Profile Help. It also draws on Ahrefs' two studies of AI Overview citations and Pew Research Center's 2025 click study. When we read the first page for this search, every result was an agency or tool blog. None was Google's own page, so this post starts from the documentation.

What does Google say it takes to appear in AI Overviews?

Google says a page needs nothing beyond what ordinary search already requires. As of October 2026, its Search Central page on AI features says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. That is the condition for appearing as a supporting link, and there are no additional technical requirements.

The same page says no special optimizations are necessary. The official answer cuts two ways. Nothing special is required, so there is no trick to buy, and the whole job is the ordinary one: a page Google indexes, ranks and is allowed to quote.

Check both AI Overviews and AI Mode when you look for your business in Google AI answers; Google says their links vary.

How much does ranking on page one matter?

Ranking is the most reliable route to an AI Overview citation, but it is no longer the only one. Ahrefs found in July 2025 that 76.10 percent of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top ten, across 1.9 million citations. Its March 2026 update found 37.9 percent of cited URLs in the top ten, 31.2 percent at positions 11 to 100 and 31.0 percent beyond the top 100.

Ahrefs says its parsing improved between the two studies, so the figures are not directly comparable. It also found that 18.2 percent of the citations from outside the top 100 were YouTube URLs. Read together: a top-ten page is still the most likely kind to be cited, and a page can be cited without ranking when it answers the exact question. Pick a search you can win; our post on checking whether a keyword is worth writing about covers reading the first page before you write.

Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025 and found that people clicked a traditional result in 8 percent of visits with an AI summary against 15 percent without. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1 percent of visits. A page that ranks under an overview without being in it has lost about half its clicks. A page cited inside it is one of the few links left.

How does your Google Business Profile get your business mentioned?

Google's own guidance for its AI experiences names the Business Profile next to the page. In his May 2025 post, John Mueller of Google Search Relations writes that site owners should "ensure that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date," alongside their text, images and video.

Ask Google a local question that returns an AI Overview, and the businesses named carry the listing's rating, hours and address. That is an observation anyone can repeat, not a published figure, but it shows where the profile's fields end up.

The profile is ranked by its own rules. Google's Business Profile Help says local ranking is based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better one. The same page lists what helps:

  • Verify the business, so Google knows you are authorized to represent it.
  • Keep the address, hours and other details accurate and complete.
  • Respond to reviews.
  • Add photos and videos of what you offer.

Describe the business the same way on the profile and on the site, so an assistant can connect the listing to the page. Our guide to getting recommended by Gemini goes deeper on Maps and the profile, because Gemini draws on them directly.

What page shape gets lifted into an AI Overview?

The passage an AI Overview lifts is a short, complete answer under a heading that matches the question, with a source for each claim. The same shape earns a featured snippet, and Google requires snippet eligibility to be cited at all.

Write the answer in the first paragraph, 40 to 60 words, in plain language. Give each section a heading phrased as the question people type. Open it with two or three sentences that stand alone, and link each figure to where it came from.

The research that defined generative engine optimization, by Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton University and Georgia Tech, found that citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40 percent. Princeton's record of the paper, presented at KDD 2024, puts the headline gain at up to 40 percent. The same paper found keyword stuffing performed about 10 percent worse than doing nothing. Our post on writing a blog post that gets quoted by AI walks through the shape section by section.

Which settings keep you out of AI Overviews without you knowing?

Four controls decide whether Google may quote a page, and all four live on your own site: Googlebot access in robots.txt, and the noindex, nosnippet and max-snippet rules. Google's AI features page says to limit what Search shows from a page you use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, and the same controls apply to AI features.

Control Where it lives Effect on AI Overviews, per Google
Googlebot blocked robots.txt Not crawled for Search, so never a supporting link
noindex Meta tag or HTTP header Out of the index, so out of AI features
nosnippet or data-nosnippet Meta tag or HTML attribute No snippet, so nothing to quote
max-snippet Meta tag Caps the text that may be shown, including in AI features
Google-Extended robots.txt Not a Search control; it manages Gemini training and grounding

Mueller's post adds that "More restrictive permissions will limit how your content is featured in our AI experiences." The usual accident is a rule meant for something else: a nosnippet added years ago to stop a price list being scraped, or a sitewide max-snippet cap set by a plugin nobody remembers. We built the crawler check for exactly this kind of silent rule, and our two-minute robots.txt check for AI crawlers covers how to read the file.

How do you check whether AI Overviews mention you?

Search Google for the questions your customers ask, in two or three wordings, and read the overview and its links. Note whether your page is among the sources, whether your business is named, and whether it is recommended rather than listed. Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, not reported separately.

Do it monthly with the same wordings, from a signed-out browser, and write down the three answers. If a competitor is cited in AI Overviews and you are not, open the cited page and compare its opening paragraph, its sources, its date, and where else that business is mentioned.

PARCHMNT is a writing tool that researches what ranks for a search, writes the page, checks every claim and tracks where it lands in Google and AI answers. Its monthly visibility check asks each assistant, Google's AI Overviews included, the questions a page was written for. It records whether the page was cited, the business named, or the business recommended. In our experience the three move separately, which is why they are recorded separately.

Key takeaways

  • Google requires nothing beyond indexing and snippet eligibility to appear in AI Overviews; there is no separate optimization and no form.
  • A top-ten page is the most likely kind to be cited, but Ahrefs' 2026 update found 31 percent of cited URLs beyond the top 100, so a page can be cited without ranking.
  • The Business Profile supplies the local half: verified, complete, current, with answered reviews, described the same way as the website.
  • Preview controls and a blocked Googlebot keep a page out of AI features; Google-Extended does not control Search.
  • Search Console does not separate AI traffic, so check the overview yourself monthly in the same wordings.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking Google-Extended remove you from AI Overviews?

Not according to Google's documentation. Its crawler page says Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal. The token manages whether crawled content may train future Gemini models and ground Gemini apps.

Do you need structured data to appear in AI Overviews?

No, Google asks for none. Its AI features page says there is no special schema.org structured data that you need to add. Structured data still earns rich results and makes your author, date and business explicit, so keep it for those reasons, not as a ticket into the overview.

Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?

No, they are two products built on the same index. An AI Overview is a summary placed above ordinary results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate experience Google describes as helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed. Google says they may use different models and techniques, so their links vary. Check your business in both.

Can you pay to be mentioned in an AI Overview?

No, Google offers no paid route. Its Business Profile Help says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google, and its AI features page describes no paid placement. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in the overview is selling something Google does not offer.
