How to Get Your Business Recommended by Gemini (Search and Maps)
To get your business recommended by Gemini, rank for the question in Google Search and keep your Google Business Profile verified, complete and current. Google says Gemini uses public information from Google Search and Google Maps when it answers. Describe the business the same way on the site and the profile, then ask Gemini yourself and open its Sources.
This post is built on Gemini Apps Help, Google Maps Help, Google Business Profile Help and Google Search Central's crawler documentation, plus Ahrefs' studies of AI citations. When we read the first page for this search, one agency's city-level pages filled most of it and nothing came from Google.
Where does Gemini get its recommendations?
Gemini draws on Google's own services. Its help page on connected apps says that "Gemini automatically uses public information from certain Google services," and lists Google Search, Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps and YouTube.
The same page draws a line between them. Gemini can always use public information from Google Search, even when the Keep Activity setting is off or the person is signed out. Maps, YouTube, Flights and Hotels require Keep Activity to be on. For a business, two inputs matter most: how you appear in Google Search, and how you appear in Google Maps, which is where the Business Profile lives.
Google's help page on related sources says that when sources are available, a Sources button appears at the bottom of the response or in line. As of October 2026, that button is how you see which pages and listings fed a recommendation. Open it first when you check whether you appear in Gemini.
How does Google Search decide what Gemini can see?
A page Gemini can cite is a page Google has indexed and ranks for the question. Google does not publish how far down its results Gemini reads.
The nearest published measurement is for a sibling product. Ahrefs found in July 2025 that 76.10 percent of pages cited in Google's AI Overviews ranked in the top ten. Its March 2026 update found 37.9 percent in the top ten, 31.2 percent at positions 11 to 100 and 31.0 percent beyond the top 100. Ahrefs says its parsing improved in between, so the two are not directly comparable.
AI Overviews are not Gemini, but both are built on the Google index. Ranking is the most reliable route, and a page that answers one specific question well can be cited by Gemini without ranking first. Our post on getting mentioned in Google AI Overviews covers Google's own rules for that.
One control is specific to Gemini. Google's crawler documentation says the Google-Extended token manages whether crawled content may be used for training future generations of Gemini models that power Gemini Apps. It also covers grounding, which Google defines as providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time. The same page says Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search, nor is it used as a ranking signal. Blocking it leaves your rankings alone and may keep your pages out of Gemini's grounding. Our post on whether blocking Google-Extended hurts rankings weighs that tradeoff.
How does your Google Business Profile shape Gemini's local answers?
For a question with a place in it, the Business Profile is the record Gemini reads through Google Maps, and it is ranked by Maps' rules rather than your website's. Google's Business Profile Help says local ranking is based on relevance, distance and prominence.
Relevance is how well a profile matches what someone is searching for. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher, and prominence is how well known the business is. Google's page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and lists what helps:
- Verify the business.
- Keep the address and hours accurate, and the profile complete.
- Respond to reviews.
- Add photos and videos, and in-store products where eligible.
Google Maps Help says Gemini inside Maps can find places near you or your destination and answer questions about specific places, based on the person's location preferences. Ask Gemini for "a bike repair shop near me" and the answer arrives as listings with ratings and hours. That is an observation anyone can repeat, not a published figure. It shows where the fields in your profile end up in Gemini local answers.
| Profile field | Google's factor or guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category and services | Relevance | Pick the category you would be searched for; list every service plainly |
| Address, service area and hours | Distance; keep information up to date | Keep them exact; update holiday hours early |
| Reviews and your replies | Prominence; respond to reviews | Ask every customer; reply to each review |
| Photos and videos | Show what you offer | Add real photos of the work, the place and the people |
| Business description | Consistency with your website | One sentence: what you do, for whom and where |
What should your website say so Gemini can repeat it?
Gemini quotes passages, so the page that gets you recommended states the business plainly in one sentence, answers the question in its first paragraph and backs each claim with a linked source. The same shape earns Google's snippets, which is where Gemini's search input comes from.
Clockbird is a fictional time-tracking app used here as an example. "Clockbird is a time-tracking app for freelance designers in the United States that rounds billable hours to each client's rules" is a sentence an assistant can repeat. "We help creatives reclaim their time" is not. Name the service, the audience and the place, and use the name the profile uses.
Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton University and Georgia Tech found in 2023 that citations, quotations and statistics lifted visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40 percent. Princeton's record of the paper, presented at KDD 2024, puts the headline gain at up to 40 percent. The same paper found keyword stuffing made pages about 10 percent worse.

How do you check whether Gemini recommends you?
Ask Gemini the questions your customers ask, in two or three wordings, and open the Sources button on each answer. Record whether your site or your Maps listing is among the Gemini sources, whether the business is named, and whether it is recommended rather than listed among others.
Repeat monthly with the same wordings, signed in and signed out. Google's help page says Search is always available to Gemini while Maps and YouTube depend on the Keep Activity setting. In our experience building the visibility check, local wordings ("near me", a neighborhood, a city) return different sources from general ones, so we test both.
PARCHMNT is a writing tool that researches what ranks for a search, writes the page, checks every claim and tracks where it lands in Google and AI answers. Its monthly visibility check asks Gemini and the other assistants a page's questions and records cited, named or recommended for each, so a change shows up on a schedule rather than as a surprise. When a competitor is recommended, compare their listing and page with yours: category, reviews and replies, hours, and whether the page answers in its first paragraph.
Key takeaways
- Google says Gemini uses public information from Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube, Flights and Hotels; Search is always available to it, the rest depend on a setting.
- Ranking for the question is the most reliable route; Ahrefs' 2026 update found 37.9 percent of AI Overview citations in the top ten, and Gemini reads the same index.
- The Business Profile is ranked by relevance, distance and prominence; verify it, keep hours exact, answer reviews, add photos.
- Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding and does not affect Search rankings, so blocking it is a Gemini decision, not an SEO one.
- Ask Gemini monthly and open its Sources; the listings and pages it shows are the ones to study.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini the same as Google's AI Overviews?
No, they are different products on the same index. AI Overviews are summaries inside Google Search results. Gemini is a separate assistant with its own app and website that draws on Google Search and other Google services. A page that ranks helps with both, but Google documents Maps and YouTube as Gemini inputs, so check each product separately and expect different sources.
Does YouTube help you get recommended by Gemini?
Google lists YouTube among the services whose public information Gemini uses, so a video that answers a customer's question is one more place Gemini can read about you. Give it a plain title that matches the question, a description that names the business the same way as your site, and a link to the page. Google publishes no figure for how often Gemini cites videos.
Does Gemini read structured data?
Google's Gemini help pages do not mention schema markup. For Search, Google says no special structured data is needed to appear in its AI features, and asks that any markup match the visible text. Keep LocalBusiness and Organization markup so your name, address and hours are explicit. Expect it to help Google's understanding rather than to move Gemini by itself.
Can you pay to be recommended by Gemini?
No, Google offers no paid route. Its Business Profile Help says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google, and Gemini's help pages describe no paid placement in answers. Anyone promising guaranteed Gemini recommendations is selling something Google does not offer.
