Why Does ChatGPT Recommend My Competitor and Not Me? Four Checks
The answer to "why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me" is visible in the sources under the answer. Either the pages ChatGPT read say more about your competitor than about you, or your site is not in ChatGPT search. Read those sources, compare them with your page and your mentions elsewhere, and the gap is often narrow.
What follows is a diagnosis method rather than a list of tips. It is built on OpenAI's documentation of its crawlers, Ahrefs' 2025 studies of which sources each assistant cites, the 2023 research on generative engine visibility, and what the sources panel shows. When we read the first page for this search, every result was an AI visibility tool or agency post. Where the answer is an observation, it is labeled as one.
Is your site allowed in ChatGPT search?
OpenAI's documentation on its crawlers says that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A competitor can be recommended over you simply because your robots.txt shut the door.
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you find User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Disallow: /, or a User-agent: * group with Disallow: /, that is your answer. The common cause is a "block AI bots" template from 2023 that listed every OpenAI agent together.
OpenAI separates them. GPTBot is for training. ChatGPT-User fetches pages for a user's actions and is not used to determine whether content may appear in search. OAI-SearchBot is the one that matters here, and OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to be reflected. If the file is clean, move on; most businesses that ask this question are allowed in.
What do the cited sources say about your competitor?
Ask ChatGPT the exact question, with search on, and open every source under the answer. The pages that mention your competitor are the diagnosis, and they are rarely the competitor's own homepage.

| What you see in the ChatGPT sources | What it usually means | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison articles and "best of" lists with them, not you | The recommendation was borrowed from a page that already made it | Get listed on the same pages or their equivalents |
| Review sites with many recent reviews of them | More public evidence about them than about you | Ask every customer for a review on the sites ChatGPT showed |
| Their own page, cited for a specific claim | Their page answers the question in a quotable passage | Rewrite your opening to answer, with a sourced figure |
| Forum or Q&A threads naming them | People recommend them where your customers ask | Answer those threads under your own name |
| Nothing about you, anywhere | ChatGPT has no evidence either way | Create the evidence: listings, reviews, one definitive page |
In our experience the sources are consistent enough to act on. That is an observation rather than a published figure: a recommendation answer usually leans on a handful of third-party pages, and those pages are the places to be. Our post on getting recommended by ChatGPT explains cited vs recommended in more depth.
Does your page answer the question ChatGPT was asked?
When a competitor's own page is cited and yours is not, the difference is usually in the first paragraph. Their page answers the question in plain words with a figure and a source. Yours describes the company, opens with a question, or buries the answer under a heading called Overview.
Take Clockbird, a fictional time-tracking app used here as an example. Suppose someone asks which time-tracking app rounds billable hours to the nearest six minutes. A page whose first paragraph says "Clockbird rounds billable hours to six-minute increments by default, and to any increment a client requires" can be lifted whole. A page that opens with "Time is your most valuable asset" cannot.
The research measured this. Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton University and Georgia Tech found in 2023 that citations, quotations and statistics raised a page's visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40 percent. Princeton's record of the paper, presented at KDD 2024, puts the headline gain at up to 40 percent.
The same paper found keyword stuffing made pages about 10 percent worse when tested on Perplexity. It did not test ChatGPT, so treat it as the best evidence available rather than a measurement of ChatGPT itself. Rewrite the opening and the one section that matches the question, and leave the rest alone.
Is the web consistent about your business?
An assistant recommends what it can describe with confidence, and confidence comes from the same facts appearing in several places. If your directory listing says one name, your site another and your reviews a third, ChatGPT has three weak signals where your competitor has one strong one.
Check five places and write down what each says you are: your homepage, your Google Business Profile, the two directories your industry uses most, and your main social profile. The name, the one-sentence description, the services and the area served should match word for word where they can.
Add a sentence to your site that an assistant can repeat: the exact name, what the business is, for whom and where. PARCHMNT is a writing tool that researches what ranks for a search, writes the page, checks every claim and tracks where it lands in Google and AI answers. Its Get mentioned plan does the listing work for this step: the directories, review sites, communities and comparison pages where a business should appear, with one action per assistant.
Why does ranking first on Google not carry over to ChatGPT?
Because the assistants do not read the same web. Ahrefs compared the fifty most-mentioned websites across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews in June 2025 and found that only 7 websites were in the top 50 for all three.
The same studies show where ChatGPT's weight falls. Across 957,000 ChatGPT prompts, Ahrefs found Wikipedia was ChatGPT's most mentioned domain at 16.3 percent, with news outlets such as Reuters next. Reddit and Quora, which rank high in AI Overviews, did not reach ChatGPT's top ten at all. "Biases in the training data and partnerships can change which sources are mentioned by different AI Assistants," writes Patrick Stox, Technical SEO at Ahrefs, in the study.
Your Google position helps, because ChatGPT search draws on the open web. But a competitor with a Wikipedia mention, a news story or a presence on an established review site has a source ChatGPT already leans on. A brand not showing in ChatGPT while ranking first on Google is the normal case, not a glitch, which is why AI visibility has to be measured on its own. Our post on how AI assistants choose which sources to cite has the full table of where each assistant looks.
What should you change first?
Change what the sources pointed at, in this order. First the robots.txt line, then the opening of the page that matches the question, then the mismatched descriptions, then the third-party pages where your competitor appears and you do not.
- Fix access. Allow OAI-SearchBot and wait a day; OpenAI's 24-hour figure applies to the robots.txt change, not to being cited.
- Rewrite the opening of the page that matches the question, with one sourced figure in the first paragraph and a heading that uses the question's words.
- Align the five descriptions so the name, services and area match everywhere.
- Get onto the two or three third-party pages the sources showed, and ask customers for reviews on the site ChatGPT cited.
- Ask again in a month, in the same wordings, and record cited, named and recommended separately.
Expect page changes to show within weeks of a recrawl, and the recommendation to follow the mentions. In our experience building the visibility check, we record the three outcomes separately for this reason: a page can be cited for months before the business is ever recommended.
Key takeaways
- Check the OAI-SearchBot line first; an opted-out site is not shown in ChatGPT search answers however good its pages are.
- The sources under ChatGPT's answer are the diagnosis; they are usually comparison pages, reviews and threads, not the competitor's homepage.
- When the competitor's own page is cited, the difference is an opening that answers with a sourced figure; the research put the lift from citations and statistics at 30 to 40 percent.
- Only 7 of the 50 most-mentioned sites were shared across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, so a Google ranking does not carry over by itself.
- Change what the sources pointed at, one thing a week, and ask again in a month with the same wordings.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking GPTBot explain why ChatGPT recommends a competitor?
No, the two crawlers are independent. OpenAI's documentation says GPTBot governs training and OAI-SearchBot governs ChatGPT search, and that each setting is independent of the others. A site can block GPTBot and still appear in search answers. If OAI-SearchBot is allowed, the cause is in the sources, your page or your mentions, not in the training crawler.
Should you mention the competitor on your own page?
Yes, when a fair comparison helps the reader decide. A page that compares your product with the one ChatGPT recommends, honestly and with specifics, is the kind of page recommendation answers cite, because it already contains a judgment. Keep it accurate and dated, and never invent a weakness. Our post on writing a comparison page that ranks covers the shape.
Does the answer change if you ask ChatGPT again?
Often, yes. Rewording the question or asking on another day can change the sources and the businesses named, which is an observation anyone can repeat rather than a published figure. Ask each question in two or three wordings and treat the consistent result as the real one.
What if ChatGPT answers without searching the web?
Then it answers from its training data, which you cannot inspect or change on any schedule OpenAI publishes. Turn search on, or ask a question that needs current information, so the answer carries sources you can read. The sources are the only part of the process you can act on.
